Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, Or what's a heaven for? (2013 New Year's resolutions check-in)

At last we come to the final quarterly check in for the year. Only to be superseded with tomorrow's new resolutions list. First, a reminder of previous progress:

Original
1st quarter check-in
2nd quarter check-in
3rd quarter check-in

5 copies of another artist's painting
I didn't do a solitary copy this year. I have some great originals to copy, but studio time feels just too darn precious to give up to work that is not original. I'm not too happy with that attitude, and I know that I'll definitely carry over this goal next year.

60 9 X 12 or smaller paintings
100 of 60 completed
Nailed it! :) So that's minimum bar for next year set.

11 12 X 12 or bigger paintings
17 of 12 completed
Nailed it! :) Given that I have a solo show set for July, that's minimum bar for next year too.

80 sketchbook pages
90 of 80 completed
Squeaked on by.

10 pieces of jewelry
12 of 10 completed
Squeaked on by. I hope there'll be more done on this next year-- I posted two already, expect to see a few more pop on the blog in the next few months.

200 blog posts
177 of 200 completed

Finally, I had a 'secret' goal-- 200 blog posts. I like a blog post to contain original content-- and that pretty much means a post should contain original art (seeing as how I'm not much of a writer.) The full time job can make that a bit dicey. I was well on the way to getting to lucky #200, but work and the holidays crushed my output.

Still, all and done, I did manage my second best post tally since I've been blogging...

 Happy New Year!

Skull Number 3 (repost)

Happy Halloween! This is a repost from May, but I thought it fitting for the day...

Skull No 3,  oil on linen, 5" X 7", 2013
$125 USD framed

Palette and lighting set up

Initial block in. If you squint, you can see that I've established three main value groups. I started with the darkest value for the shadow part of the skull (which you can see in the picture above this one)-- which is also my middle value in this case.

I've now filled in the lightest values. While there will be lots of refinement in the drawing, and the addition of a few darker darks and highlights, the main value structure is complete.

Changing of the Guard

Changing of the Guard,  oil on linen, 5" X 7", 2013
$125 USD framed
September is one of the more memorable times in my hometown of Santa Fe. Its the changing of the seasons, Fiestas, the aspens in the mountains turn to gold, and the smell of roasting chile all around.
Here's a little nod to the old hometown.

On a side note... sometimes paintings don't work out. Above is the first version of this piece I did, the night before. It really kicked my butt, so it got wiped down and started anew.

Sketchbook Saturday

There's a blurred out section here that has a little work related information-- which while not earth shattering, is probably still sensitive.
