California Art Club

I was perusing Matthew Innis’s blog Underpaintings, and noticed that the California Art Club’s annual exhibit was going on while I just happened to be in LA. Seeing work in person by artists such as Joseph Paquet, David Leffel, Mian Situ, and Calvin Liang was just too good to pass up, so I moseyed on down to the USC campus to see the exhibit.

Really, really strong work. The internet is so bountiful in what we can see, it’s easy to forget just how much more impressive the work can be in person. Leffel’s work for example, is often poorly reproduced—it’s far more nuanced in person.

I was surprised at the salon style hanging of the smaller work. I suppose I shouldn’t have been, but you rarely see this density of paintings in modern museums, or high end galleries.

It was great to get up close to some of my faves—Paquet had some beautiful subtleties in his work. Being there allowed for deeper inspection (although I did get yelled at for taking up close detail pics).

Skull No 3 (plus a behind the scenes)

Skull No 3,  oil on linen, 5" X 7", 2013

Palette and lighting set up

Initial block in. If you squint, you can see that I've established three main value groups. I started with the darkest value for the shadow part of the skull (which you can see in the picture above this one)-- which is also my middle value in this case.

I've now filled in the lightest values. While there will be lots of refinement in the drawing, and the addition of a few darker darks and highlights, the main value structure is complete.

Skull No 2

Skull No 2,  oil on linen, 5" X 7", 2013
$125 USD framed
I've been working on food pieces for so quite awhile this year in advance of the Brackenwood show, and I've really needed a palette cleanser so to speak. This resin replica skull makes for a great classical subject.
For those of you into less macabre subject matter, there's only a couple more skull paintings coming down the pike, and then we'll switch gears again...
