Long Shadows on a Choteau Road, oil on linen, 8" X 10", 2009

Hoo boy was it cold in Choteau, Montana this Christmas. Many times the mercury dipped below -5 degrees Farenheit, -15 Celsius. Painting was especially cold, as you are pretty much just standing around in the snow for a couple of hours.

Work meetings are the best place to sketch people, especially since you have to listen as opposed to talk.
I already talk too much in meetings.

Happy Holidays!
Hot Tub Santa, acrylic on bristol paper, 5" X 7"
I'm in balmy Choteau Montana for Christmas this year, where if I was smart, I'd warm my bones in a hot tub, just like Santa here. Instead, I hope to get a few paintings done in between family events.
Here's a hearty thank you to all the people who have make my life awfully terrific this year.

Second painting from this last Lincoln City trip. Cold and windy. It was mostly cloudy, or as Mary Jo puts it... "partly sunny!"

Sketchbook Saturday
(click pictures to enlarge image)
I have two sketchbooks-- one is primarily reserved for drawing, the other is mostly for painting ideas, notes and such. The drawing sketchbook has better paper than the other, the note book has more pages.
I split into two books because I noticed that I rarely look at older books, and what's the point of making notes for painting ideas if you never look at them? The note taking book takes longer to finish than the drawing book, so I'll be carrying the ideas around longer, making it more likely that I'll get around to exploring some of ideas inside.
Like the drawing sketchbook, I use the notebook for "homework"-- in this case I've posted some notes I made on some Duane Keiser paintings he did this summer in Maine. I bought the painting in the second set of pages.

I painted this on Sunday, but I probably shouldn't have-- it was very cold and threatened rain the whole time. I was sick that weekend, and still sick now. Not the swine flu, but a definite crud. Blech.

I'm very lucky to have been included in the newest issue of Artists and Poets magazine. Especially lucky, because one of my heroes (Duane Keiser) is in the same issue! It's very snazzy, and the full issue is available on line.

I tried to do some 'review' from memory of the studies I've been doing from Hamm's book. I was a little disappointed to realize that I totally need to keep brushing up on some particular stuff-- especially profiles.

This is the right hand page of last Sunday's post.
I spent some time looking at some of Nimit Malavia's sketchbook work, which reminiscent of James Jean's work. I thought I'd see if I could work some color into my own books. The pencils I got aren't the greatest for drawing with, but I muddle through.

My buddy Chris gave me some of the amazing bounty from his garden in West Seattle. These shallots look nothing like what you see in the store... they still have roots and stems.
They taste scrumptious. Nom.
