Box #2, oil on linen, 7" X 5", 2008
soldThis piece revisits (by commission) a painting done awhile ago. Most of the time I work on canvas panels (or masonite panels) for small pieces, and stretched linen for larger stuff. For this piece, I took the opportunity to try out a new surface; a linen panel.
Store bought linen panels are about 10 times more expensive than canvas panels, but whoo! What a fun surface to work on!
I need to invest the time to make some of my own...

Jason: That box is so cute, I wanna pinch it! The sides of the flaps are very well painted as are all the subtle surface values. How about another sister painting with something in the box? Maybe a dumb suggestion.

That's a pretty good suggestion... I have used the same box before, for clementines and onions, but I was more focused on the shadow space, not the 'boxiness.'
I'll put that suggestion in the hopper...
Solid painting Jason. You got the creases and folds down and the corrugated edge.
Linen panels are real nice to paint on. I still use gessoed masonite sometimes when I want a certain look or bounce to my brushwork.
Thank you Frank. I like painting on linen, and I just about feel strong enough on the little ones that I bought a big old roll of pre primed linen, and I'll start making my own panels.
I also like gessoed masonite... and I have a new dalliance with clayboard.
