I was under a time limit with this one-- I had to meet Mary Jo in about an hour, but I wanted to get at least one painting in for the day, so I set up on Jeff's motorcycle, and did a quick sketch.

We were in Choteau for about a week, and there were few days that weren't cloudless. Seeing this lone puff ball riding watch over the herd instantly suggested a painting to me.

Road to Ear Mountain (sold)
Road to Ear Mountain oil on canvas, 9" X 24", 2011
sold
One of the most famous landmarks around Choteau is Ear Mountain, in the center of this image. Doesn't look much like an ear though, does it?

Summer came late to Choteau and the Rocky Mountain Front so there was a lot of green-- and tall high grass for the grazing cattle.

Here's the first painting of my recent road trip to Choteau Montana.
I set up at a gas station/bar/casino along highway 200. Mary Jo went in for a meal and a drink while I hacked away at the canvas. It's one of the larger pieces I've attempted plein air, and a little ambitious for my first of the trip.

Sketchbook Saturday

While the new moleskine seems harder to work graphite with, color pencils do alright.

Picked up a mannequin torso at a garage sale for 10 bucks. Figured it'd do for some figurative studies.

First pages of the new book... which I'm not sure I'm a fan of. The pages are slicker than the last moleskine I picked up. Doesn't take pencil as well as the last book.

I'm on the road to Montana, painting landscapes. You'd think I'd look happier...
