Hmm... what's missing here?
Yikes! I forgot to bring white!
Thankfully I hadn't thrown away my last palette, and was able to scrounge some left over titanium white...
Crisis averted...

My girl doing what she does best... laid out in her pajamas in front of the fireplace, toasting her feet.

I mentioned in a post last week (Hazy Studio View) that often when I do studio view paintings I focus on a small, distant sliver of the horizon. This is a little closer to what I actually see out to my immediate left.

Angel Gallery Opening Report
Last Friday Mary Jo and I drove on over to Coeur D'Alene, Idaho to attend the May art walk. I was the featured artist at Angel Gallery, and was asked to do a painting demonstration during the event. We had a very nice time-- the weather and setting were each beautiful, the company couldn't be beat. In the picture above, you can see my art in a corner of the gallery, and Mary Jo, looking stunning, chatting with one of the nice Angel Gallery folk.
I found a pretty little Degas dancer reproduction, and decided to focus on that as my subject.
My joke was that was probably as close as I'll ever come to hanging next to Degas, so I should probably take advantage of it.
I staked out a little spot that wouldn't interfere with foot traffic too much, and began painting.
I was working without a net... nice jeans and shirt. No apron.
There was a large turnout, and I did my best to engage and interact with the crowd.
After 3 hours or so of painting and talking, the final piece:
And I didn't even get paint on my clothes.
Thanks to everyone who turned out, Mary Jo for her lovely support, and to Angel gallery for hosting the event!

Whenever I paint the view from my studio, I think I make it seem like I have this awesome view of mountains and trees. Nothing further from the truth. This is the tiny little sliver of horizon I see through tree branches, wires and rooftops.

I've really been meaning to get back into figurative work, and I think I'll make Friday posts figure related. Expect to see more self portraits than you probably want to, as I am the cheapest and most easily available model. For now, Mary Jo has been kind enough to pose on occasion.
Please note that this painting is for sale, but it is unframed.

I've been sketching a bit more as of late, so a good mix of work and home in these pages.

I've painted this before a couple of years ago. Thought it'd be worth a revisit to see what's changed over time...

Inspiration Sunday
I know I owe the third part of this series:
Notes on becoming an artist... part one of three
Notes on becoming an artist... part two of three
But it's my blog and I reserve the right to give my self an extension on part three. :)
I did mention that Sundays are for inspiration. Normally I'll probably focus on a single artist to keep these posts short. The following three artists though are sketch artists-- so here's a quick outline of each...
Nimit Malavia-- check out the "process' section of his website.
Donald Colley-- and his website.
James Jean-- website
Select a year, then use the "previous/next' buttons below the image that pops up to explore the sketchbook.
NOTE: many of Jean's pages contain nudity and/or sexual suggestive imagery, and would be considered "Not Safe for Work." They are also amazing-- you can spend hours looking at these.
