Langley Waterfront (private collection)
Langley Waterfront, oil on canvas, 8" X 16", 2010
(private collection)
The weekend before Thanksgiving I stopped over in Langley to deliver some paintings to Brackenwood. I got up early on Saturday and worked in the clear morning-- I was in shade for 3 1/2 hours during a cold snap. Brrrrr....
I need to adjust the value of the lit part of the poles with the lights, so the lit part glows a bit more.

I love it when a face just sort of comes together with what feels like just a few strokes. This new grandpa's face was one of those.

One of my all time favorite movies is Philadelphia Story, and the title for this piece comes from that movie...
As Dexter is leaving, he calls attention to the tissue-wrapped article that he brought - it is a wedding present. While Tracy dives into the pool and swims over to the pool's edge, George (who has appeared) unwraps Dexter's bundle - a model of the True Love - "a boat he designed and built practically" for their honeymoon cruise. As Tracy floats it in the swimming pool next to her, she describes how they sailed it down and back the coast of Maine the summer they were married. Tracy's memories are aroused about the sailboat:
"My, she was yar...Awesome flick. The text above comes from Filmsite.org
It means, uh...easy to handle, quick to the helm, fast, right. Everything a boat should be, until she develops dry rot."

Sketching at a work meeting, and noodling on some potential layouts for new paintings. Two of the sketches are from other artists (Carol Marine is one, I think), notes for composition ideas.
The finished boat painting sketched out above should be posted in the next day or so...

Fall really has settled in here in the Pacific Northwest-- cold and rainy. When I started this piece I could see the horizon, at the time of the picture below, the town was getting obscured by misting rain.
It took a half hour or so for my fingers to get feeling back in 'em. Time to start painting with gloves underneath my gloves...

There's something inherently adorable about the shape of figs that gives them character lacking in other fruit (with the possible exception of pears).

Devil Ducky... and a show alert!
Devil Ducky, oil on board, 5" X 7", 2010
sold
As mentioned in my last post, I have some new pieces at Brackenwood Gallery in Langley on Whidbey Island-- this is one of them. The show runs until the end of the year, and opening night is this Saturday from 5-7 pm. I'll be there for most of the night, so if you're in the neighborhood, please do stop in and say hello!
This piece is available at the gallery. Hopefully you'll note the new price. Starting in the New Year, all pieces will be $125, and I'll start charging a nominal fee of $10 for shipping to the continental US. Each painting arrives handsomely framed and ready to hang on your wall, and your satisfaction is guaranteed.

Two Figs (on hold)
Two Figs, oil on canvas, 5" X 7", 2010
(on hold)
I've been prepping to deliver paintings for a group show at Brackenwood Gallery in Langley on Whidbey Island here in Washington state. I've created half a dozen new pieces, but I'm not sure which (or how many) they'll be interested in hanging-- or holding.
Expect to see a flood of new work over the next few weeks as I figure out where pieces are headed.

A new gallery!
This painting can be found at Angel Gallery in Coeur d' Alene, a beautiful little spot right downtown. I met the owner Patricia because of Mary Jo-- my girlfriend who makes all good things possible. :)
If you're in Coeur d' Alene tonight, this painting and a few others will on display during the October Artwalk.
Let me know if you stop by!

The trees in my yard just got their first haircut in about ten years, and I snagged a few pears from just before the mayhem. Still young, not ripe to eat, but pretty enough.

These are antique tailor's shears that I've painted before. I've always been drawn to the gesture of the open scissor; to the curve of the grips and the gentle taper of the cutting edge.

For the last nine years I thought this tree in my yard was a cherry tree. Apparently I'm not much of an arborist. It's a plum tree. The plums are just really small.
Cherry sized.

Normally too early for me (7:45 am), I got into town and set up before it got too hot. I had seen this Chevrolet Del Rey on day one in Choteau, and knew I wanted to paint it. Probably originally canary yellow, it's certainly faded to a faint pastel.
