First painting day of my annual road trip to Choteau. Overcast and a little rainy. The tripod for my trusty Easy L easel seems to be missing a required piece, which means setting up in the back of the car, and propping it up as best I could.
The first plein air piece of the season-- time to try and find my sea legs...

But that painting did NOT work, so it was wiped down. Next up was a really pretty scene a hundred miles away-- an approaching storm.

I painted a version of this on site in Choteau Montana this summer. The earlier version is here.

This is the first painting I've done in the studio based on a field study and supporting photographs . I enjoyed the process, and felt much closer to the subject than if I had painted from just photographic source.

I'll probably do this scene again, considering what I learned from this painting.
