Almost on the wagon...

With the advent of Lent, it's about time to put the hard stuff away, so for those of you sick of the booze posts, here's a progress shot of some landscape work that's in the pipeline.
Those familiar with South Whidbey may recognize a few places. Or at least, I hope they do...

Six thousand one hundred and thirty eight inches of paint

90 feet of wire
200 screws
84 individual surfaces
6138 inches of paint
Inside those boxes and that bubble wrap are the paintings for my show at Brackenwood Gallery in Langley on Whidbey Island. The show runs through July.
From the gallery:

Summer has arrived in the Pacific Northwest and Brackenwood Gallery is poised to embrace it wholeheartedly with a show featuring, oil painter Jason Waskey and “Garden Garnishes” Sculpture Exhibit from 7 of Whidbey’s finest sculptors. Join us for the Artists’ Reception on July 5 from 5-7 PM.

Jason Waskey has shown at Brackenwood for several years but this is his first solo exhibition. Patterns and Repetition are themes Jason focused on for this show. Waskey is passionate about being a working artist and commits time to paint daily. Taking inspiration from the world around him, Jason creates a sense of story, incorporates craftsmanship and introduces humor into his paintings. Waskey tries to say something new with each picture be it a takeaway from a meal left on the table, or the reflection in a tea pot on the stove or perhaps a contemplative view of the inside of his studio. Jason Waskey is a painter of our time creating original works of art absolutely worth collecting!

Showing with Waskey is a sculpture exhibit entitled “Garden Garnishes”. Given that our gardens are in full bloom it’s a perfect time to find just the right sculpture to accentuate the beauty you’ve created. On display will be sculptures in bronze, stone and steel made to adorn the home or garden by artists: Dan Freeman, Georgia Gerber, Ivan Neaigus, Jim Patereau, Sharon Spencer, Sue Taves and Lloyd Whannell. Mary Fisher of Cultus Bay Nursery and Maureen Murphy of Bayview Farm and Garden are creating a “garden” ambiance in the gallery.

The exhibit continues through July 28, 2014.

Aspirations...

From Illustration Art (David Apatoff):

Vincent Van Gogh: Before he became a painter, Van Gogh aspired to be a magazine illustrator. He praised the quality of illustrations in magazines such as Graphic, Illustrated London News, L'Illustration, and Harper's Weekly, and clipped out their drawings, which he pasted in portfolios for further study. UCLA art professor Albert Boime quotes Van Gogh's correspondence on this topic: "[Van Gogh] declared: 'I would like to go to London with portfolio and visit the editors and managers of the illustrated journals-also get information about the different processes-a double-page spread allows for broader style.' That he fully intended to specialize in magazine illustration is seen in his hopeful observation that magazine editors would welcome 'somebody who considers making illustrations his specialty.'"

..and this was my dream in college at Parsons. To be an editorial illustrator, in the tradition of Pyle, Lyendecker, Rockwell, Tepper, Holland, Kelley, and Silverman. Ah.

Turned out okay (from an historical point) for Van Gogh... right?

Sketchbook Saturday

Random stuff... kitties, live sketching, an idea for part of a show I'm working on, and a doodle from a photo I found in my mail (it was a solicitation from a photographer).
